Microfiction: Waiting

I shivered while I waited. Peering up at the castle window, I wondered if he’d keep his promise. My cold fingers had gone numb–my breath a frosty cloud.

A movement caught my eye, and I held my breath and chewed my fingers. A dark shape descended the castle wall. What if the rope snapped? I couldn’t bear to look but I couldn’t tear my eyes away.

My heart pounded as he reached the bottom. Oh, the relief! Then he ran towards me, silhouetted in the moonlight, glancing behind him.

He reached me and pressed his lips urgently against mine. A shout came from the castle and we broke apart. I grabbed his hand and we turned and ran, vanishing into the woods. Free at last.
