A while ago, @QuillWriters did a Tuesday Twitter game called Words of Unusual Sizes. I wanted to share some of the best words that people came up with:
Long words:
- The longest place name in the UK: Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch
- Longest words with no repeated letters: Dermatoglyphics, Misconjugatedly, Uncopyrightables
- Name of a hill in New Zealand: Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateapokaiwhenuakitanatahu
- Longest word whose letters are arranged in alphabetical order: Aegilops
- English word with longest string of vowels: Euouae
- Longest word Shakespeare used, also consists of alternating vowels and consonants: Honorificabilitudinitatibus
- Longest word with no vowels: Symphysy
Unusual words:
- Only word with three consecutive double letters: Bookkeeping
- Word meaning the fear of long words: Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia
Short words:
- Shortest words: A, I
- A selection of two-letter words (useful for Scrabble!): am bi do ex fa go hi id jo la mu no oh pi qi re so ta um wo xi ye za
So, next time you play Scrabble and end up left with all the vowels or all consonants–there’s no need to panic 🙂
Great post! I’m sad I missed that Quill session, sounds like it was a great one! Thanks for collecting some of the highlights together. I’m proud to say I knew most of those two-letter words (I play a lot of Scrabble with my mother.)
My husband is a Scrabble fan too. I thought he was making all the two letter words up at first 😀
