Words of Unusual Sizes

A while ago, @QuillWriters did a Tuesday Twitter game called Words of Unusual Sizes. I wanted to share some of the best words that people came up with:

Long words:

  • The longest place name in the UK: Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch
  • Longest words with no repeated letters: Dermatoglyphics, Misconjugatedly, Uncopyrightables
  • Name of a hill in New Zealand: Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateapokaiwhenuakitanatahu
  • Longest word whose letters are arranged in alphabetical order: Aegilops
  • English word with longest string of vowels: Euouae
  • Longest word Shakespeare used, also consists of alternating vowels and consonants: Honorificabilitudinitatibus
  • Longest word with no vowels: Symphysy

Unusual words:

  • Only word with three consecutive double letters: Bookkeeping
  • Word meaning the fear of long words: Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia

Short words:

  • Shortest words: A, I
  • A selection of two-letter words (useful for Scrabble!): am bi do ex fa go hi id jo la mu no oh pi qi re so ta um wo xi ye za

So, next time you play Scrabble and end up left with all the vowels or all consonants–there’s no need to panic 🙂
